Bathroom Mirrors: Plain, LED, Demister, or Smart?

The bathroom mirror is more than just glass — it's lighting, storage, and a design feature. Our guide to choosing the right mirror for your renovation.

A bathroom mirror does more than show your reflection — it affects lighting, creates the perception of space, and can include practical features like illumination and demisting. Here's how to choose the right one.

Mirror Types

Plain Mirrors

Simple, unframed or framed glass mirrors. The most affordable option and available in any size. Best when combined with good overhead or wall lighting. A large, frameless mirror from floor to ceiling can transform a small bathroom.

Price: £30 – £200

LED Illuminated Mirrors

Mirrors with integrated LED strips — typically around the perimeter or behind the glass (backlit). LED mirrors provide even, flattering light for grooming tasks and contribute to overall bathroom lighting. Most operate on a touch sensor or push button, and some include colour temperature adjustment.

Price: £100 – £600

LED Mirrors with Demister

LED mirrors with a built-in heated demister pad that prevents steam condensation. The pad sits behind the glass and activates when the mirror is switched on. In a bathroom without a powerful extractor fan, a demister mirror is genuinely useful — no more wiping the mirror after every shower.

Price: £150 – £700

Mirrored Cabinets

Wall-mounted cabinets with mirrored doors. Combine the mirror function with concealed storage for toiletries, medications, and smaller items. Available in various sizes from single-door to triple-door units. LED-illuminated versions with demister are available from brands like Roper Rhodes and HiB.

Price: £100 – £800

Smart Mirrors

Mirrors with additional technology — Bluetooth speakers, clock displays, colour temperature adjustment, touch controls, and in some cases, integrated shaver sockets. The Roper Rhodes Aura and HiB Globe are popular smart mirror options in the UK.

Price: £300 – £1,000

Sizing

The mirror should be proportional to the basin and vanity:

  • Minimum: Match the width of your basin or vanity unit
  • Optimal: Slightly wider than the vanity for visual balance
  • Maximum impact: Full-width wall mirror — makes the room feel twice as large

Height should position the mirror so the centre is at average eye level (approximately 1500-1600mm from the floor).

Electrical Considerations

LED mirrors and mirrored cabinets need an electrical connection. In bathrooms, this must be installed by a qualified electrician to IP-rated standards:

  • Zone 1 (above bath/shower): Minimum IP65 rated
  • Zone 2 (within 600mm of bath/shower): Minimum IP44 rated
  • Outside zones: IP44 recommended but not required

Most LED mirrors are hardwired, though some offer a plug-in option for installations outside wet zones.

Our Recommendations

  • Best value: HiB Zircon LED mirror with demister — good quality, competitive price (from £180)
  • Best design: Roper Rhodes System illuminated mirror — sleek, excellent light quality (from £300)
  • Best cabinet: HiB Xenon mirrored cabinet — triple door, LED, demister, charging socket (from £400)
  • Budget pick: Plain oversized frameless mirror with separate wall lights — maximum impact for minimum cost

Frequently Asked Questions

Do LED mirrors provide enough light for the bathroom?

LED mirrors provide excellent task lighting for grooming but shouldn't be the sole light source. Combine with ceiling downlights for general illumination.

How long do LED mirror lights last?

Quality LED mirrors use LEDs rated for 30,000-50,000 hours — that's over 10 years of daily use. LED failure is very rare in quality mirrors.

Can I install an LED mirror myself?

If it's a plug-in model outside the wet zone, you can. For hardwired mirrors (most LED mirrors), a qualified electrician should make the connection, especially in bathroom zones 1 and 2.

Is a demister pad worth the extra cost?

Yes, especially in bathrooms where the mirror is near the shower or bath. The convenience of a clear mirror after every shower is worth the modest premium (typically £30-50 extra).
