Large Format Tiles: Why London Homeowners Are Choosing 600x1200mm

Large format tiles are transforming London bathrooms. Here's why 600x1200mm porcelain tiles deliver a more luxurious finish and what you need to know before choosing them.
If you've browsed any bathroom showroom or Pinterest board recently, you'll have noticed the shift towards larger tile formats. The standard 300x600mm wall tile is being replaced by 600x1200mm large format tiles that create a dramatically different look — fewer grout lines, a more seamless appearance, and an unmistakable sense of luxury.
Why Large Format Tiles Look Better
The visual difference is striking. A typical bathroom wall covered in 300x600mm tiles might have 40-50 visible grout lines. The same wall in 600x1200mm tiles? Perhaps 8-10. Fewer grout lines mean a cleaner, more expansive look that makes even small London bathrooms feel more spacious and premium.
Large format tiles also tend to come in more sophisticated finishes — marble effects, concrete looks, oxide metals, and textured stones — that simply don't look as convincing in smaller formats. When you see a beautiful marble-effect tile spanning 1200mm of uninterrupted surface, the illusion is far more convincing than a patchwork of smaller pieces.
Installation Requirements
Large format tiles aren't a simple like-for-like swap for smaller tiles. They demand:
- Perfectly flat walls: Even 2-3mm of unevenness in the wall substrate will be visible as lippage between tiles. Walls often need re-boarding with plasterboard to achieve the required flatness
- Specialist adhesive: Rapid-set flexible adhesive applied with a large-notch trowel, often using back-buttering on both the tile and the wall for full coverage
- Suction cup lifters: Each 600x1200mm porcelain tile weighs approximately 12kg — they cannot be safely handled or positioned by hand alone
- Levelling clips and wedges: Essential to prevent lippage between tiles and ensure a perfectly flush finish across the entire surface
- Professional wet cutter: Standard manual tile cutters can't handle the size and thickness — a professional bridge saw or large-format wet cutter is required
Popular Large Format Tiles We Install
Some of the most popular choices we're currently installing across London include:
- Stonehouse Studio Tulsa Turquoise Oxide — A stunning metal-effect tile with turquoise and rust oxide patina
- Marble-effect polished porcelain — Calacatta, Statuario, and Carrara-inspired designs that mimic natural marble at a fraction of the cost and maintenance
- Concrete-effect tiles — Smooth, urban-inspired surfaces in grey, charcoal, and warm taupe tones
- Terrazzo-effect tiles — Flecked, speckled designs that reference the current terrazzo trend
Cost Considerations
Large format tiles themselves are comparable in per-square-metre cost to quality standard tiles. However, the installation cost is higher due to the additional substrate preparation, specialist tools, and longer fitting times. Expect to pay 20-30% more for labour compared to standard tile installation. The result, however, is a finish that looks significantly more expensive than it actually is.
