LED Bathroom Lighting: How to Get It Right

Good lighting transforms a bathroom from functional to atmospheric. Here's how to plan LED lighting that looks great and meets safety regulations.

Lighting is one of the most underestimated elements of bathroom design. The difference between a single ceiling bulb and a properly planned LED lighting scheme is enormous — not just aesthetically, but in terms of daily usability and the way the space makes you feel.

Bathroom Lighting Zones

UK regulations divide bathrooms into three zones for electrical safety:

  • Zone 0: Inside the bath or shower (minimum IPX7 rated)
  • Zone 1: Above the bath or shower to 2.25m height (minimum IPX4 rated)
  • Zone 2: 0.6m around the bath/shower and above the basin (minimum IPX4 rated)

All bathroom lighting must be appropriately IP rated for its zone. IP65 rated downlights are safe for Zones 1 and 2, which covers most bathroom installations.

Recessed LED Downlights

The workhorse of modern bathroom lighting. Recessed into the ceiling, they provide even, shadow-free illumination across the room. For most London bathrooms, 3-4 downlights are sufficient. Look for:

  • IP65 rating for bathroom use
  • Fire rated for ceiling penetrations
  • Dimmable — essential for creating different moods
  • Colour temperature 3000K-4000K — warm white (3000K) creates a relaxing atmosphere, while neutral white (4000K) is better for task lighting

LED Backlit Mirror

An LED backlit mirror combines task lighting, ambient lighting, and a design feature in one. The soft perimeter glow provides even, flattering illumination for grooming and makeup — far superior to overhead-only lighting which creates harsh shadows. Many also include:

  • Demister pad — Keeps the mirror clear after a hot shower
  • Touch sensor — On/off and dimming without a separate switch
  • Colour temperature adjustment — Switch between warm and cool white

Accent and Feature Lighting

For premium bathrooms, consider adding subtle accent lighting:

  • LED strip under a floating vanity — Creates a gentle glow on the floor tiles
  • Niche lighting — Illuminated recessed shelves in the shower area
  • Backlit panels — Behind a freestanding bath or as a wall feature
