Small Bathroom Ideas: Making the Most of Compact London Spaces

Small doesn't have to mean compromised. These design strategies will make your compact London bathroom feel spacious, stylish, and fully functional.
Space is at a premium in London. Many of the bathrooms we renovate are compact — sometimes as small as 3-4m² — yet our clients still want them to feel luxurious, modern, and functional. The good news? With the right design choices, a small bathroom can feel significantly larger than its actual footprint.
Layout Is Everything
In a compact bathroom, every centimetre matters. The layout should be planned meticulously before any work begins. Key principles:
- Door swing: Consider a sliding pocket door or outward-opening door to reclaim floor space
- Shower position: Place the shower in the furthest corner from the door to maximise the feeling of space when you enter
- Toilet position: A back-to-wall or wall-hung toilet saves 100-150mm compared to a standard close-coupled toilet
- Basin placement: A wall-hung vanity unit with storage keeps essentials accessible without cluttering the floor
Fixtures That Save Space
- Wall-hung vanity unit: Keeps the floor visible, making the room feel larger. Choose a compact 400-500mm width with integrated basin
- Back-to-wall toilet with concealed cistern: The furniture unit sits flush against the wall, and the cistern is hidden behind, saving 150mm+ of depth
- Walk-in shower with fixed panel: Eliminates the visual bulk of a framed enclosure and the space needed for a door swing
- Recessed niches: Built into the shower wall during tiling, these provide storage without protruding into the room
Tiling Tricks for Small Spaces
- Same tile on walls and floor: Using one tile throughout creates a seamless, uninterrupted visual that tricks the eye into seeing a larger space
- Large format tiles: Counterintuitive but true — larger tiles with fewer grout lines make small spaces feel bigger
- Light colours with texture: Light grey, warm white, or pale stone-effect tiles reflect more light while the texture adds interest
- Tile to the ceiling: Full-height tiling draws the eye upward and creates a premium, finished feel
Lighting and Mirrors
A large LED backlit mirror is the single most effective space-enhancing trick in a small bathroom. The reflection doubles the visual depth, while the soft perimeter glow provides flattering, ambient lighting. Combine with recessed ceiling downlights on a dimmer for flexibility between bright task lighting and relaxed atmosphere.
